You know I'm not into the whole 4/20 scene, but today is what today is.
Today's topic: The Karen.
After photos were taken of Denver nurses standing to block the Right To Die protesters, and the "Karen" shouting at them from her pickup truck window waving her "Land of the Free" sign, a new debate on the propriety of "Karen" as an insult has been sparked. This particular image, and comment caught my attention:
The K-word? Stronger than the N-word? Listen, Karen - this isn't about the subjugation of a race of people, or even the subjugation your gender. This is simply about middle-aged, overly-privileged white women who complain in places where they have no place to complain. Such as someone protesting for her right to catch a deadly virus, or bitching at a minimum wage store clerk just trying to do their job the right way, and won't accept her old expired coupon, or refund her money on shoes she bought 6 months ago, and worn a dozen times because they didn't hold up as expected. Call the manufacturer if you think their products are shoddy. Amber at the Target customer service counter doesn't deserve the grief.
Unlike the historical, and long term use of the N-word, Karen is a relatively new concept. It isn't about taking away a woman's right to complain, it's about showing someone they're complaining about something that doesn't require a complaint, and/or the complaint is directed at the wrong person. It's about women who think they can complain to intimidate someone into giving them something they don't truly deserve.
That's Karen.
That's my entry for today. Carry on.
